ROCKET RACOON?!?!? WHO IS THAT?!?!?!?!? WHY WOULD YOU PICK SUCH A... UH... ANONYMOUS MARVEL CHARACTER? FOR THE GAME? If you're going to pick something as ridiculous as Rocket Raccoon, WHAT'S WRONG WITH HOWARD THE DUCK?!?!
—BlackbusterCritic on Rocket Raccon's inclusion in Utimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Alright, so Rocket Raccon originated in the 2008 reboot of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy comics. There's not much to say there. Fast forward to 2011, when Marvel and Capcom were working on the "Ultimate" version of their own crossover fighting game, Marvel vs Capcom 3, which brought in characters like Frank West, Nemesis T-Type, Phoenix Wright, Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, and, well, Rocket Raccoon. Some were excited to play as Rocket Raccoon, but others... (WARNING: EAR RAPE)
...were not. This was mainly due to, as the angry guy in the video explains, Rocket Raccon being a niche character at the time. Fast forward again to 2014, when Marvel releases the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, with Rocket Raccoon as one of the main characters. Suddenly, everybody's talking about him again, and nobody hated him anymore. Just imagine the reaction he would get if he was in Smash.
