Black Shadow is the villain of the F-Zero anime, and a villain in the games, and he's seen as an extremely popular newcomer choice in Japan simply for his role in the anime and having a popular voice actor. Everywhere else, people just want him so that they can reenact the Falcon Punch scene. And who can blame them?
Why He's Popular[]
He was pretty much one of the most popular characters out of the anime in Japan. Plus he had a well-known and also popular voice actor (NORIO. ****ING. WAKAMOTO), who would be willing to reprise said role (as of Brawl). In fact, he is actually pretty popular. No, really.
On the GameFAQs side of things, he's the most popular choice for an F-Zero rep. A poll conducted by kidmf935 had Black Shadow get over 65% of the votes (as of August 2, 2014 at 8:28 PM GameFAQs time, he has 145 votes and counting).
Black Shadow is also pretty popular due to fans wanting him to take 's current moveset and make him a clone of Zelda. This will never happen though because Sakurai.

Around the 13 minute mark comes what 50 episodes had been building up to, but you wouldn't know that, would you?
The F-Zero anime was ending, and the creators knew it. So they decided to go out in style. Captain Falcon delivered a Falcon Punch to Black Shadow, and they were both subsequently engulfed in an explosion. Unfortunately, the explosion was not caused by the Falcon Punch. You read that right. It was caused by Black Shadow's base exploding. Just watch. If you look at the 15:40 mark, you can clearly see the explosion being caused by something that's not the Falcon Punch, which is only knocking Black Shadow into the explosion and killing him. Yep, we just ruined Captain Falcon for you. Merry Christmas.
