But, I guess since a lot of them are children, it cannot be helped.

—Masahiro Sakurai roasting people who dislike clones

According to Sakurai, an Echo...echo...echo...echo... Fighter is a clone character that serves almost no difference when compared to the source character, and so it occupies a piece of that character's slot. As such, in Ultimate you can choose to arrange the character selection screen with either the echoes as separate slots or cramming them in the original character's slot with the option to choose between them with a button press. There is a chance that Sakurai was too much of a to strictly out any melee newcomers as 'not unique' fighters so he took to

Former Clones (Echo Fighters)[]

In Melee, Brawl and Sm4sh, they are referred as clones before the Echo term happened in Ultimate, this also lists characters that were now semi-clones. Some clones have been altered in the later games as to stand out more on their own.

Definitions of different kinds of clones:

  • full clone (often shortened to just "clone") will have unique taunts and victory poses, may have unique attributes (such as being heavier or faster) or non-combat animations (such as running or jumping), and perhaps a unique attack or two. Otherwise, they share effectively all moves and animations with their parent. Pichu in Melee and Lucina in SSB4 are examples of full clones.
  • semi-clone has several unique attacks and animations of their own while retaining a significant amount from their parent. Falco in Brawl and Roy in Smash 4 are examples of semi-clones.
  • pseudo-clone is, for the most part, their own unique character, but with enough moves or animations copied from their parent that it would be inaccurate to say they are not cloned to some degree. Wolf in Brawl and Luigi in Ultimate are examples of pseudo-clones.

Super Smash Bros. Melee (Nintendo Gamecube)[]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Nintendo Wii)[]

Note: It is arguable that Brawl had no same-y clones of anyone, and at most it had semi- or pseudo-clones.

Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo Wii U & 3DS)[]

  • Lucina (Marth clone): Now an echo-fighter in Ultimate.
  • Dark Pit (Pit Echo): Now an echo-fighter in Ultimate.
